NOTE TO READER:
All characters and locations are based on real locations and characters.
This is a work of truth not fiction. After many month’s of research and consumption of frappuccinos, I can fully say: This book is filled with lots of sarcasm.
Chapter 1
My pocket started to vibrate. I stopped playing the guitar and let it hang on my shoulder. I juggled around in my pocket, past my keys and wallet to my cell phone. The wind was fierce next to the ocean. I had to keep my shaggy indie hair from getting in my eyes. I looked down at my cell phone caller id; it was a text message from an unknown number:
“Its Saul, new cell #. Where you at? ”
I responded with quick text:
“Dana Point… why, what’s up? ”
As I was awaiting his response I began to put my guitar away in its case, it was getting close to midnight. I looked around at the couples cuddling on wooden benches. They came to watch the wave’s crash up on the shore; it was so beautiful with the moon reflecting on the ocean. I grabbed a swig of water to keep my voice moist, it was getting dry from singing. My phone began to vibrate again.
“Meet at the hotel that over looks Dana Point on cliffs. I’ll be there in 30,” stated his text message. I began to get a little curious as to why he wanted to meet… especially at a hotel.
“Are you bringing ladies? .”
He replied quickly:
“I need your help. J ust meet me there alright? ”
“K champion, better be awesome.” I responded, closed my phone and picked up my guitar case. I headed toward my car, which I would drive up the extremely steep road, to the hotel. I watched my shadow follow me as I dug my sandals into the sand. I stopped and set my guitar case down, so I could save Saul’s new number in my phone before I would forget. The wind blew against me, reminding me to bring a hoodie next time.
It had already been 30 minutes, when I sat down on the hotel couch, waiting for Saul to arrive. I was getting a little sleepy so I kept glancing out the window, which had a great view of the ocean. The hotel lobby was dark with tinted lights. A bored hotel manager sat at the checkin-desk watching TV.
I saw Saul walk up the steps through the window, and he nodded his head. He was Asian, with over gelled hair and sporting a fancy black suit.
“Hey Phil! Sorry about the wait.” He said as he came into the hotel lobby. I got up off the couch and walked towards him.
“It’s almost 1 in the morning, why are we meeting here? ” I asked as he set down his briefcase next to the checkin desk on the floor.
As I walked toward him he said “give me a minute I gotta check in.”
He turned back to the clerk and said “I have reservations for two rooms, under Saul Wu.”
The clerk nodded and began to look up the rooms on the computer.
“We’re getting rooms? ”
“Separate rooms, but were going to talk in mine.” Saul filled out a couple of papers before he was handed two plastic room cards and a good-night nod from the manager.
“I didn’t bring a change of clothes; I was planning on sleeping at my dorm room tonight.” We walked over to the elevator.
“Come on, you’re a guy, sleep in what you’re wearing now.”
“Fine, but you still haven’t explained why we are meeting here.” The elevator doors opened and we walked in.
“You’re sure impatient for a psych major, and what’s with the beard? ” Saul pressed the button with a 3 on it and the doors slowly slid to a close.
“I thought I would go with the whole Indie beard thing.” The elevator began moving up.
“Think you’ll still rock it out when you’re a full time psychiatrist? ”
“I haven’t thought about that… I was hoping I would be discovered on the street and become a rock star.” The elevator door slowly slid open and we headed down the hallway.
“Don’t you have classes? ”
“I have the summer off.” We stopped at a door and Saul swiped his key card through the lock.
“Your room is 322, which is across from mine.”
“You’re paying for this right? ” Saul flipped on the lights and I plopped down on the first bed.
“Depends, if you stay.” Saul set his briefcase on the round table by the window and opened it up.
“So why did you really bring me here tonight? I got up and closed the door and walked over to Saul at the table.
“Phil, how much are you currently in debt from college loans? ”
“Why? Are you going to pay it off? ” I said sarcastically.
“Possibly for you help.”
“Go on.” I began to get excited.
“I have been assigned to a case which involves looking for an explosive device…”
“I don’t have any skills in that area.”
“Will you stop cutting in, you’re a terrible listener. I have no idea what gave you the idea to become a psychologist? ”
“I always wanted to be a psychologist so I could meet the crazy criminals, hear their stories and write songs about them.”
“Well more reasons why you should help me.” Saul pulled a folder out of his briefcase.
“What you will be doing, is wearing contact lens which are cameras and search through location tunnels looking for an explosive device.”
“That’s all? ”
“Well. You would be disguised as a security guard at the location.”
“Why don’t you have somebody who works there or one of your agent friends do it?
Why me? ”
“Look, the location you would be at, has thousands of people visiting it everyday… it risks an agent being spotted by a released criminal. “
“Well I would wear a disguise, so why couldn’t an agent? ”
“Do you want to be debt free? I’m offering you an opportunity and you keep picking out all the plot holes.”
“Hey I’m being realistic; I mean when we find the bomb or whatever, I can’t disarm it.”
“You don’t need to. You will be given this tracking device which locates materials normally found in explosives. I would watch you on my laptop in a SWAT van through your contact camera lens. Once you find it, I would come in with a swat team and take care of everything.”
“Oh, I get it! You don’t have a warrant? ”
“Well we never got proof of it ever being there… we would use you so no agent could be court marshaled for trespassing. You would be taking the identity of a transferring security guard so you would be considered an employee. You would be looking for the bomb while you’re working there, that way you’re not trespassing. What do you think? ”
Saul was gripping the folder he pulled out of his briefcase waiting for my response.
I sat there in silence thinking of what it would be like to be debt free. To have all the pressure off my shoulders.
“Saul you can’t expect me to say yes right
away, I mean why did you choose me when you could have chosen anyone? ”
“Because you’re someone that I can trust… more importantly I know you can trust me.”
Chapter 2
I knocked on Saul’s door as sun shined through the hotel’s open hallway window. I waited for Saul to open his door and I began to munch on my fresh bagel. I could hear the ocean and a seagull chattering through the window. The door swung open and Saul stood fully groomed and ready to take on the day.
“Did you decide? ”
“Saul you know I could go for some adventure.” He took that as a yes and grabbed a plastic store bag that was filled with stuff and tossed it at me. I caught it and found razors and hair supplies inside.
“Good good, I need you to shave and cut your hair since there’s a dress code.” He moved out of the doorway and headed towards his lap top on the wooden round table.
“Whoa! Whoa! That’s kind of a big thing you left out.” I walked into the room.
“You’re still in right? ”
“I’m going to need a little extra payment for this inconvenience.”
“Do you wear contacts? ”
“Yeah actually, I had to sleep with them in all night since I didn’t have my contact supplies.”
“Do you know your prescription off hand? ”
“No, I have no idea.”
“I need you to find that out after you take care of your hair. I need to get you new lens with a camera lens inside your contacts so you can see clearly out of them while recording you’re actions.“
“What a way to start out my morning.” I walked into the bathroom, flicked on the lights and shut the door. I dumped the bag’s contents into the sink; an electric razor, a pair of hair clippers, and shaving cream. I looked into the mirror. My Blue eyes stared back at me. I ran my fingers through my hair one last time.
“ZZzzrrrz!” I heard as I turned on the razor, and watched as my hair fell into the sink. As each lock of hair fell, my head became lighter. I heard a knocking at the door. I turned the razor off.
“Hey, I need you to study up, all the information and everything you need is on the table. I’ll be back around twelve with some lunch and I’ll be ready to go over any questions you have.”
“Sounds good,” I said as I looked into the mirror at my half shaved head.
After about twenty minutes I rubbed my hands on my newly cut hair. It felt weird, but I knew it was the start of something new, a whole new life. I was used to changing my hair style since I wanted to find my perfect musician character style. I couldn’t cut the back of my head so I left it for Saul to fix when he got back.
It was a quarter to one when Saul opened the door carrying what smelled like a delicious sub.
“Finally, I was gong to have to order room-service if you were going to take any longer”
“Ha ha Nice hair, I think you missed a bunch on the back of you head.” Saul chuckled as he handed me the sub. I opened the bag and took a big bite out of the sandwich. Saul turned on his laptop.
“I was looking over the papers you told me to read, and I noticed that the location was Disneyland? Why would someone put an explosive under a child’s theme park? ”
“It’s a famous landmark, and lots of important people visit there. It would be devastating if it went off and injured or even killed innocent people.”
“I guess… do you have any idea when it will go off? ”
“No that’s why we need to act fast. I have a job appointment set up for you tomorrow.”
“Whoa, so soon? ”
“Hey gimmie me a razor, I’ll fix your hair real fast. Also I need to take a photo for your driver’s license.” I set the sub on the table and grabbed a towel to wrap around my neck.
“Awesome no DMV, where were you my whole life? ” Saul took a razor and started to trim up the back of my head. Hair fell from my head to the carpet.
“I’m going to be honest, this doesn’t look that bad, but its cut uneven, and it’ll grow weird.” Saul turned me around and trimmed up my side burns.
“Hey luckily I have cut my own hair in the past.”
“You look fine, now get ready to smile,” Saul said as he propped me up against the hotel wall and positioned my face.” Saul took a picture on his cell phone.
“I’m going to send this to be processed into a driver’s license after you picked you’re new identity.” Saul walked over to his laptop and pointed to the screen which had a list of Orlando Disney World security guards names. The guard’s photos were next to their names along with descriptions of their location and experience.
“You are going to take the identity of a security guard from Disney World. Your story is that you’re transferring over to Disneyland, because you’re switching to a college out here. This is just in case any of the employees search you or managers do a search on you.”
“I pick Amadeus Benedict.”
“You don’t want to look at any other names? You just picked the third name on the list.”
“If I’m going to have a fake identity it has to be awesome.”
“Alright I’m going to take his information and use it on your resume. You better hope that nobody social networks you, since this Amadeus is 30 years old, with two children.”
“I’ll say I was in a messy divorce.”
“I’m sending this information to be processed for your driver’s license, and fake social security info.” Saul pulled some papers out of his briefcase.
“Where am I going to be staying during this time? ”
“You’re going to be staying at the hotel straight across from Disneyland; a room is already set up for you. I need you to go to your dorm room and pack up all you’re clothes and everything that you will need for at least a week.”
“Did you review everything? Any questions? ”
“Do you think I’ll look sexy in the uniform? ”
Chapter 3
I threw my suitcase on the hotel bed. I didn’t really feel like unpacking, I was hoping that we would find the lethal device fast and that it wouldn’t take that long. I set my guitar case on the side of the bed and walked over to the window. I looked down at the busy street of South Harbor Boulevard. The hotel was directly across from Disneyland.
I heard my phone vibrating in my backpack. I set the back pack on the table and pulled out my phone. It was a text from Saul:
“Are you in your room? ”
“Yeah, room 322… again? ” I tossed my phone on the bed and flipped on the TV.
About two minutes later I got a knock at the door. I flipped the TV off and greeted Saul at the door.
“Alright I got a lot of information to dump on you.” He handed me a contact container, which I grabbed.
“Should we do a test run with the contacts? ” I asked as I went over to my back pack and scavenged for my contact container to take out the current contacts in my eyes.
“Yup, give me a second I need to boot up the computer.” Saul took his laptop out of the briefcase and set it on the wooden table by the TV as I took out my contacts.
“Do you have everything you need for at least a week? ”
“Yup I’m good, my roommate said he would watch the place.”
“What did you tell him you were doing? ” He asked as I began to put the camera contacts in my eyes.
“I just told him I was visiting my family up in North-Cal for a week or two.”
“Good, good.” Saul turned on the program then waited till I had the contacts in.
“Is it working? ” I looked at the computer screen and we could see in the video player, one of my eyes was looking at the computer, and the other video player window was all white.
“Your right eye contact is in backwards.”
“Hold on.” I flipped the contact inside out and put it back on.
“These have a pretty good distance. I’ll be in the parking lot next to Walnut St. in my van. So we should be fine.”
“That’s not suspicious at
all. What about audio? ”
“Thanks for reminding me. I got this little connector that I need you to attach to your security ear bud that they are going to give you. Remember to detach it after your shift because they always give you a new one.” Saul handed that to me and then he went rummaging through his brief case.
“Where do you connect it? .” I looked at the device. “Never mind… I see you plug it into this little connector port thingy.”
“Yeah and don’t lose that!” Saul handed me a device that looked like a stud finder, with flashy buttons.
“What’s this? ” I grabbed it and set it on the table. I then began to put back in my regular contacts since the test was over.
“That device is going to find us the bomb. Anyway this device has about a 4 foot range of detection of lethal chemicals. It’s also going to pick up mold, but I’ll tell you when we find the real bomb. Since I will be seeing what you see.” Saul turned off his computer and began to put it away.
“Did you study up on everything? ” He quickly turned and asked.
“Easy. I’m more of a visual learner; once I’m there in person it will be easier to match.” I moved my suitcase to the floor and sat on the bed.
“Good, because you’re meeting with the head of Disneyland security.”
“What do I wear? ”
“J ust casual.”
“What about food and stuff? ” Saul then walked over and gave me a debit card.
“I transferred 70 k to your bank account, 3 k is for food, hotel bill, gas etc. Try not to go over. The rest is to make a down payment on your loan.”
“We could get this done in like a day, right,? ”
“We’ll see, but you won’t get the rest of the money till the job is complete.” Saul also handed me a piece of paper with the time and location of where I was supposed to go meet the head of security.
“Be early.”
I walked down a white hallway, and occasionally glanced into the passing rooms, which just seemed to be offices with people buzzing around. Surprisingly, I thought that the Disneyland headquarters would be more decorative and fun. It seemed like any other office building with Disney stuffed animals on a computer or a poster here or there. I was surprised how busy it was for a Sunday afternoon. I glanced down at the piece of paper Saul gave me, which said “meet at the Head of Security department, room 524 at 1:30
